
The retirement age of employees in Vietnam is prescribed by law. Compared with the 2012 Labor Code, the statutory retirement age has been increased. This adjustment is based on the fact that the average health condition of employees has significantly improved; many employees at the former retirement age remain capable, mentally alert, and willing to continue participating in the labor relationship.
This article sets out in detail the statutory retirement age of employees as follows:
For employees working under normal working conditions, the retirement age is gradually adjusted until reaching 62 years old for male employees by 2028 and 60 years old for female employees by 2035.
As of 2021, the retirement age of employees under normal working conditions is:
- 60 years and 03 months for male employees, and
- 55 years and 04 months for female employees.
Thereafter, the retirement age shall increase by 03 months per year for male employees and 04 months per year for female employees.
Employees who suffer from a reduced working capacity; those engaged in arduous, hazardous, or dangerous occupations; or those working in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions may retire up to 05 years earlier than the statutory retirement age.
Specifically, the schedule for adjusting the retirement age of employees under normal working conditions is as follows:
